Letter From Leadership

October 2022 ADAA Update

Sue Circle

Dear ADAA members,

As dental assistants, what skills do we possess to become leaders? Whether we are an office chairside DA, a dental office manager, or a member or officer on the National, State, or Local level of the American Dental Assistants Association?

When researching the examples of the most in-demand leadership skills,  one list I found included:

  • Empathy,
  • Strategic thinking skills,
  • Ability to inspire and convince others,
  • Flexibility,
  • Business storytelling,
  • Time management,
  • and gaining trust.

When I look at those examples, I think of the Dental Assistants who are a part of this organization.

Working at the chair helping the patient make a decision to accept the treatment plan. Holding the hand of the frightened patient. Setting up the operatory for a treatment that may change and explaining to the patient what effect it will have.

Joining ADAA and becoming an active member, learning the operations of our professional organization, and joining in representing working dental assistants regardless of where they are in the US has been such a privilege. We as dental assistants are the hidden leaders of our profession and hold the many skills needed to represent ourselves and this industry.

Sincerely,

Sue Camizzi, CDA, BSDH, MSE
ADAA Immediate Past President
