Letter From Leadership

November 2022 ADAA Update

ADAA Board of Directors Headshot Mary Beth Sjoka

Dear ADAA members,

Fall is the season when we see many beautiful changes. The leaves paint the landscape with beautiful colors, the air gets a bit crisper, and thoughts of holidays are with us. We always know this change will come, yet we must accept it each year and many people relish it.

Other than the falling leaves, changes within our normal daily activities may happen, and most of the time they are not under our control. Summer routines are different from winter routines: school is back in session for parents and students, and you may have to get up earlier to try to fit more into the waking hours.

ADAA is going through needed change. Our organization will celebrate its 100th birthday just two years from now. Dentistry has changed, and our roles have changed. Dental Assistants have important roles in the offices and what dental assistants wanted and needed 40 years ago is not the same as what is needed today.

I want to challenge everyone reading this to write to me and let me know what you need and want from ADAA. We are at a point in time where we can make ADAA a truly member-driven organization. We pride ourselves on our great education, our many webinars, all the benefits for members, and, best of all, we communicate with and help each other in times of distress, like during COVID.

Yes, we have made many changes, such as shortening and decreasing the number of meetings. Our yearly meeting was around one hour compared to two weekends like it was in the past. Much of the association work now gets done throughout the year, allowing us to report to members.

“Do you want to be heard? Do you want to help lead the organization? Get involved in council and committee work!

All the best, and have a happy Thanksgiving,
Mary Beth Sojka, CDA-Emeritus, RDA
ADAA President
