This live webinar is APPROVED FOR ONE (1) CE CREDIT and is designed to help dental assistants interpret and implement the guidelines of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 – HIPAA in order to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the dental office. Strategies to help implement the essential elements of the guidelines will be discussed and the consequences if violations occur.

Linda Bartolomucci Boyd has her degree in Psychology and a Community College Teaching Credential. She has been a Certified Dental Assistant, CDA, for 36 years and has her Registered Dental Assistant license, RDA, from California. She has been in the profession of dentistry for several years. During her career in dentistry she has experienced many changes in the profession. She began her career as an RDA and then became an educator teaching at three community colleges in Northern California. She then became a full time professor and Program Coordinator at Diablo Valley College in Northern California where she lead the RDA/CDA Program by keeping abreast of and implementing the new curriculum as it evolved. She is currently an Emeritus Professor. She is the author of the “Dental Instruments: A Pocket Guide” published by Elsevier Publishing Company. Ms. Bartolomucci Boyd has published six editions of this text and currently is working on the 7th edition. This text has been translated into 5 other languages besides English.
She has also authored a chapter in a health professional text called “Ethics and Professionalism” regarding Medical Records and HIPAA. Ms. Bartolomucci Boyd is a lecturer as well. She has been a member and involved with the American Dental Assistants Association, ADAA, and the California Dental Assistant Teachers, CADAT. Professionalism and Dentistry has been her lifelong passion.
Upon completion of this course, the dental professional should be able to:
1. Review basic principles of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 – HIPAA in regards to dental practices: Privacy Rule, Covered Entity, and Security Rule.
2. Develop a plan to keep office policies efficient and effective in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Develop training strategies for HIPAA compliance in the dental organization.
3. Implement effective HIPAA policies for all members of the dental practice.
4. List information in regards to HIPAA that will keep the dental office in compliance.
5. Develop HIPAA forms for the patient to sign that reflect the practice policies.
6. Define ways to keep paper charts private in the dental office. (PHI)
7. Define ways to keep “Electronic Patient Health Information” (ePHI) private in the dental practice.
8. List examples of HIPAA violations in the dental practice.
9. List the fines associated with violations in the dental practice.
