HIPAA in the Age of COVID-19 (AGD 148)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This webinar is APPROVED FOR ONE (1) CE CREDIT and is designed for the dental professional to familiarize them with HIPAA rules and regulations and how they impact the dental assistant and dental practice during the COVID pandemic.

PRINICIPAL FACULTY

Linda Bartolomucci Boyd, RDA, BA has her degree in Psychology and a Community College Teaching Credential. She has been a Certified Dental Assistant, CDA, for 36 years and has her Registered Dental Assistant license, RDA, from California. During her career in dentistry she has experienced many changes in the profession. She began her career as an RDA and then became an educator teaching at four accredited community colleges in Northern California. She then became a full-time professor and Program Coordinator at Diablo Valley College in Northern California where she led the RDA/CDA Program by keeping abreast and implementing the new curriculum as it evolved. She is currently an Emeritus Professor.

She is the author of the “Dental Instruments: A Pocket Guide” published by Elsevier Publishing Company. Ms. Bartolomucci Boyd has published seven editions. She is currently working on the eighth edition.  This text has been translated into 5 other languages besides English. She has authored two chapters in a textbook for Elsevier Publishing, “Effective Communication for Health Professionals”. These Chapters are extensive, mainly focusing on Communication, Professionalism, HIPAA and Health Records.  

Ms. Bartolomucci Boyd is an active member of The American Dental Assistants Association, ADAA, and was on the Council on Education & Professional Development. She has presented two different aspects on HIPAA as it pertains to dentistry for the Anna Nelson Webinar series for the ADAA.  Ms. Bartolomucci Boyd published an article in the Dental Assistant Journal of the American Dental Assistants Association in the November/December 2020 issue. The article published was: “HIPAA Guidelines for the Dental Office”. 
  
Ms. Bartolomucci Boyd is a member of California Dental Assistant Teachers, CADAT, for several years and involved previously on the conference team. She has previously presented at the CADAT conference. Professionalism and Dentistry has been her lifelong passion.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

After participating in this program, the dental professional should be able to:

  • Describe three consequences of COVID-19 and its effect on the dental practice.
  • Review the basic principles of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 - HIPAA in regards to dental practices:  Privacy Rule and Security Rule.
  • Outline privacy information regarding HIPAA and COVID-19 relative to employer and employees.
  • Describe protocols to maintain HIPAA guidelines for patients during COVID-19.
  • Discuss techniques for implementation of Telehealth in the dental practice during COVID-19.
  • Discuss strategies used by healthcare providers to conduct telehealth communication in a private setting.
  • Discuss five elements that should be included in HIPAA training sessions.
  • List the fines associated with the violations in the dental practice.
