E-cigarettes: Friends or Foes? (AGD 130)

This webinar is designed for the dental professional to familiarize them with the use of e-cigarettes and vaping and the systemic and oral effects of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).


Victoria Patrounova, RDH, MHA
 is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas in Houston, School of Dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene. 

Victoria published several articles in dental and dental hygiene journals. She presents continuing education courses on nitrous oxide conscious sedation, smoking trends/tobacco cessation and other topics on local, state and national levels.
Victoria is a recipient of 2016 GHDHA Ester Wilkins award, 2017 and 2018 Dean’s Excellence Award, and 2018 Procter & Gamble Teaching Excellence Award. She was also selected to participate in 2019 ADEA Emerging Academic Leaders program. Ms. Patrounova served as a President of Greater Houston Dental Hygienists’ Association, GAC committee member and Resolution committee chair for Texas Dental Hygienists’ Association and as Chair for ADEA Section on Substance Abuse, Addictions & Tobacco Dependence Education.


After participating in this program the dental professional should be able to:

  • Discuss the prevalence in smoking and vaping in the U.S.
  • Recognize the different types and parts of e-cigarettes.
  • Discuss the role of e-cigarettes in harm reduction and cessation.
  • Evaluate safety, benefits and disadvantages of e-cigarettes.
  • Analyze systemic and oral effects of ENDS.
  • Describe the current status and future directions of e-cigarettes regulations in the U.S.
