The Use of Prophylactic Antibiotics Prior to Dental Procedures (AGD 130)

Alice N. Hemenway, PharmD, BCPS 
is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Illinois Chicago, as well as a clinical pharmacist who practices in internal medicine and infectious diseases. She received her PharmD from Purdue University, and completed both a PGY1 pharmacy residency and a PGY2 pharmacy residency in Infectious Diseases at IU Health in Indianapolis, IN. She is board certified in Pharmacotherapy. Dr. Hemenway's clinical work and research focuses on optimizing medication therapies for patients with infectious diseases.


After participating in this program, the dental professional should be able to:
1.  Contrast the benefits of antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures with the risk of adverse effects.
2.  Review specific populations that benefit from antibiotic prophylaxis.
3.  Discuss antibiotic regimens used for prophylaxis.
4.  Using a patient case, determine if antibiotic prophylaxis is indicated and select an appropriate drug and dose.
