Career Opportunities for the Dental Assistant (AGD 130)

Presenter: Dr. Carolyn Breen Ed.D, Ed.M, BS, AAS, CDA, RDA, RDH


This webinar is designed for dental assistants so they may explore potential career opportunities beyond the scope of private practice. A variety of positions within multiple employment settings will be discussed. Dental assisting subject matter and coursework will be compared with standard coursework as related to various degree options for career advancement. Basic strategies for personal goal setting and development of a career plan will be included. 


Dr. Carolyn Breen is a Professor in the Department of Allied Dental Education of the School of Health Professions at Rutgers University.  She served as Department Chair and Program Director of the Dental Assisting and Hygiene Programs of the University and as a member of the Management and Executive Councils of the School. She received a Doctor of Education degree (Ed.D) from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Master of Education degree ( Ed.M ) from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, Management Certificate from Middlesex County College, Edison NJ, Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from Montclair State College, Montclair, NJ, Associate in Applied Science degree (AAS) in Dental Hygiene from Middlesex County College, Edison, NJ, and a Certificate in Dental Assisting from Union County Vocational Technical Institute, Scotch Plains, NJ.  Her professional credentials include Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH), Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), and Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) with certifications in CPR and standard first aid.  

In her leadership role at Rutgers University, she was responsible for the administration and supervision of the Department and participation in the planning and implementation of future endeavors of the School. 
Dr. Breen currently serves as a Board member of both the New Jersey Dental Assistants Association (NJDAA) and of the New Jersey Dental Hygienists Association (NJDHA) and on the Council on Regulation and Practice of NJDHA. She also served as the State Education Network (SEN) Liaison for NJDHA to the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA). Dr. Breen has received multiple recognitions and awards for her dedication and contributions to both dental assisting and dental hygiene on local, state and national levels.  Dr. Breen is a past president of ADAA. 


Upon completion of this course, the dental professional should be able to:

5. Compare coursework to academic degree requirements.
6. Outline potential career paths for transition to multidiscipline careers.
