Dr. Glen Hanson - "Drugs in Dentistry: Their Use, Misuse, Excuse and Abuse" Dentists receive comprehensive instruction in pharmacology as part of their foundational training in dental school and/or during residency programs. The pharmacological skills of dental students/residents are then thoroughly evaluated in National and Specialty Board exams to assure that the dental practitioner is able to properly assess the impact of medications on patients and their oral health care and adjust his/her treatments accordingly. Because of this training, properly licensed dentists are permitted by law to prescribe and manage many categories of drugs for their patients as part of oral care they are also expected to recognize the impact of all drugs being used by their patients on e oral treatments. This continuing education presentation will review some of the important principles of use, misuse and abuse of medications that are most likely to impact dental practice, such as antibiotics, analgesics, psychogenics and others.

Dr. Jacob Froerer - "Ins and Outs of Oral Graft-vs-Host Disease and Why You Should Care" (8 pm - 9 pm)

Oral Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD) is a a complication of bone marrow and blood stem cell transplants. These transplants are used to treat cancers of the blood and bone marrow including: leukemias, lymphomas, or multiple myeloma. Their use is growing and some novel applications include multiple sclerosis, sickle cell anemia, and HIV. Why should the dentist be concerned with learning about Oral Graft-Vs-Host Disease? Many oral complications exist in these patients that overlap with conditions dentists likely see frequently, including the following oral conditions: fungal infections, viral infections, bacterial infections, mucosal diseases, carcinoma, oral dryness, taste alterations, and oral mucosal pain. A review of these conditions will assist the astute dentist to further improve his patient care.
